Red List of Ecosystems at COP16
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and Convention on Biological Diversity take an ecosystem approach to implementation of the Framework’s goals and targets. Ecosystems and their integrity are prominent across the goals, targets and headline indicators.
IUCN’s standards for ecosystems – the Red List of Ecosystems and Global Ecosystem Typology – play an important role in implementing and monitoring the framework. The Red List of Ecosystems is a headline indicator (A.1), and the Global Ecosystem Typology has been recommended for national reporting and global synthesis. They are also recommended to support and private sector approaches to measuring nature positive outcomes.
The IUCN Pavillion is hosting two events to provide more information on IUCN standards for ecosystems.
The IUCN Ecosystems helpdesk will run every 2-3 days in the IUCN Pavilion’s Rainforest Room, with experts on hand to answer any questions about ecosystems in the GBF, especially IUCN’s flagship standards for ecosystems: the Red List of Ecosystems and the Global Ecosystem Typology:
- Weds 23rd October, 13.00-14.00
- Friday 25th Oct 16.00-17.00
- Monday 28th Oct 16.00-17.00
- Weds 30th Oct 16.00-17.00.
An IUCN Pavilion event, Monitoring progress for ecosystems across the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, on Friday 25th 13:45-15:15 pm, will give an overview of the indicators related to ecosystems, and how they can be implemented to monitor GBF progress. The event will include short presentations to introduce the ecosystem-related headline indicators, the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology, and examples of their use by Parties, followed by discussion and Q&A.
