The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), together with its Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM), are pleased to inform you about the three-day training workshop on The Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) and how to correctly apply this IUCN's knowledge product categories and criteria. The workshop is co-organized by the Federal University of Santa Catarina and Provita, taught by members of the LRE Thematic Group (Irene Zager and Lila Garcia).
This training will be given as part of the support for a project “Taking advantage of ecosystem-based approaches to establish priorities” led by researchers from universities and institutions in Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil, with a view to conducting an LRE evaluation of a coastal ecosystem of the South Atlantic.
The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE), underpinned by strong scientific-foundations, allow the assessment of ecosystem collapse through the evaluation of the change in ecosystem distribution and function using quantitative measures and thresholds. Assessment results can be compared between regions and over time, thus helping to identify areas that need fast and effective actions, and informing better local, national, regional and global conservation measures.
The training will:
- Provide an overview of the methodology including key concepts, examples of completed assessments at national and global scales, and their applications;
- Explain the set of five criteria and associated thresholds for performing evidence-based, scientific assessments of the risk of ecosystem collapse, as measured by reductions in geographical distribution or degradation of the key processes and components of ecosystems;
- Introduce the 8 categories for risk of collapse: Collapsed (CO), Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT), Least Concern (LC), Data Deficient (DD), and Not Evaluated (NE);
- Through targeted case studies, provide an understanding not only of how the criteria work together to assess risk but how this information can be used to inform different types of policies and management decisions; and
- Illustrate key components of the process of undertaking RLE assessments, and data and information requirements, through hands-on preliminary experience and interactive group work targeted at different audiences.
