The South American regional IUCN Commission of Ecosystems Management (CEM) chairmanship is carrying out a cycle of virtual conferences geared towards building, stimulating communication and knowledge amongst its members, mainly regarding Commission issues. The second edition of this cycle was in reference to the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems.
The conference took place on Friday August 2nd and was held by one of the project leaders, Dr. Jon Paul Rodríguez, Researcher at the Venezuelan Scientific Research Institute (IVIC), whom is also one of the founders of Provita (A Venezuelan non-profit biodiversity conservation organization since 1987, IUCN member), where many important projects regarding ecosystem red lists such as: From Alaska to Patagonia: the IUCN Red List of the Continental Ecosystems of the Americas and the Red List of the Continental Andes Ecosystems.
During this virtual conference, Dr. Rodríguez talked about the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems, its foundations and applications, explaining how this tool is based on a criteria and standards system which allows ecosystem collapse assessment. Currently these methods are being carried out in projects such as those aforementioned, as a worldwide initiative, in case studies in many countries like Australia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Venezuela, and many others.
35 people from 10 different countries (Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela) assisted this conference.
